The minds behind the magic
Alex is a data analyst/data scientist that loves his field and puts a passion in everything he does. He has worked with data since 2017 and is a seasoned teacher with previous experience in Finance and Academia, working in both the US and in Europe. As a data analyst instructor and consultant, Alex supports students and clients to develop an understanding of the solutions he is providing and makes sure they can apply the knowledge and tools in the future. This happens via a deep comprehension of the tools and methods employed rather than a repetitive execution of simple procedural steps.
IN CONVERSATION WITH ALEX:
What is your favorite technical skill to work with on your own projects and why?
I like to work with a wide collection of tools but I have my preference is with Python/Pandas. These tools are versatile and allow me to manipulate data easily.
What is your favorite technical skill to teach to students and why?
I like to teach Pandas/Python but also SQL and Tableau. Tableau gives a quick reward toi students so you feel their level of engagement increases. As for the rest, I just love working with these tools and showcase all its potential.
What is most important to you about teaching technical skills at General Assembly?
Focus on the transferable part of it. Many tools run a very short cycle before they are updated. These updates add up and you might end up with a different tool. Do not try to memorize much rather try to understand the mechanics and things that you can use with other tools.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to learn technical skills to reach new career goals?
Look around and keep your eyes open. Try to expand to new horizons and do not repeat tools that you already know by using the same one with a different name.
What would you like to highlight about your experience in your technical domain outside of teaching?
Data is a very exciting field that comes with a lot of frustrating moments followed by high excitement. Feed on the latter and forget about the former as fast as you can.
